HOW TO BE AN EXPERT COMMUNICATOR

Munmun Majundar

(Student of Spoken English, CCAI)

Communication is the activity or process of expressing ideas and feelings or of giving people information. For example, speech is the fastest method of communication between people.

Importance of communication: It’s very important to understand the thoughts and feelings of each other. Only by communication, we can understand other person’s realization. To make relationship, communication is the most important activity. Suppose we want to make friendship with one, we can do that only by communication. So it is the most important practice in our life.

Differences between human and animal communication:

Animals can not speak, so they do some particular things to show or express their feelings. For example, a lion or tiger expresses its anger by roaring, a dog shows its loyalty by waggling its tail or a snake makes hissing sound to warn. Even when they are hungry or in pain they can’t say anything but cry. But human beings are the most developed and intelligent creation on Earth. So they express their feeling by speaking. They also use their body particles in a better way than animals.

Means and modes of communication:

It means how to express our feelings and emotions to others. We do that by our limbs and mouth organs, by our gesture and posture. For example, we express an angry attitude by our eyes or show happiness by our smile or we call anybody by our hands etc. we also use mobile phones, computers, television sets, newspapers, radio etc. as the modes of communication.

Role of language in communication:

Language is the most important mode of human communication. It leads an important role to express our self in a better way than our body particles. If we use simple and attractive language in our speeches people will be more attracted to us.

Role of expression:

The famous Prof. Meharabian’s law is “The most important in communication is experience”. According to the specialists; exppression has 55% of importance in communication while the paralinguistic manner that means the way you are talking has 38% and words have only 7% importance. So now we can understand hat expression leads the most important role in communication. So now we can understand that expression leads the most important role in communication. If you are delivering a lecture in a very casual way like reading a script people would fill bore. But suppose, you describe an interesting and humorous story and your expression is also very much entertaining, people must enjoy it or you tell about an emotional feeling and your expression is also would be emotional with you. Besides that when our parents are angry with us we can easily understand by their expressions even when they say nothing to us or when they are proud of us we can understand by their smile and eyes full or tears. So expression is the main component of communication.

Effect of good and bad communication:

If you are a good communicator people easily can understand what you say. They understand your feeling and thoughts very well. But if you are bad communicator you can not clearly express yourself to others. Therefore, nobody can understand what you want to say. So if you want that other people can understand you must try to be a good communicator.

Communication accessories:

It means everything, which we use to make a communication. For making a communication better usually we use our mouth organs like lips, tongue etc. (which we call ‘Organs of Speech). We use posture and gesture (Power Posturing & Power Gesturing) and also use various types of expressions. Language is also an important accessory in our communication. There are so many languages in the world. Every country, state, province even every district has its own type of languages. Every language is an accessory of communication.

Purposes of communication:

Communication has some purposes. According to Arindam Chandra there are four purposes of communication. First is to convince people. The meaning of the word ‘convince’ is to make somebody believe that or to persuade somebody to do something. Only a good communicator can make people convinced and can make his speech believable to others. For example, our political leaders easily can make common people convinced by their speech and gain support from them. So convincing is an important purpose of communication.

Second is to inspiration people: it means to give somebody the desire, confidence or enthusiasm to do something well or to make somebody have a particular feeling or emotion. We know that the great communication like Swami Vivekananda, Mahatma Gandhi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, Sri Ramkrishna has won the heart of mankind by their speech. For example, Mahatma Gandhi said, “Do or Die” and many people of India gave response to him. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose’s “Ajad Hind Fouj” or “Indian National Army” was around by his inspiring speech, they did not even think of their life. Their speeches are so inspiring that can awaken the inward soul of us. So a good communicator can inspired other people by their excellent speech. Only an inspiring speech can stimulate our mind and bring a frustration one in the bright way of success.

Third is to entertain people. If your speech is boring then nobody concentrates to you. That is nothing but waste of time to them. They move their eyes at other sides or they look at you absentmindedly but don’t listen to you. But if your speech is entertaining, people will be attracted to you and listen to you carefully. So if you want people to be absorbed in your speech it should be amusing, witty, full of flavour and humorous.

Fourth is to inform people. When a speech is full of information it is also convincing, an inspiring and an entertaining one. If you give spicy information on your speech it must be more attractive to every people. They will be more interested to listen to you. And your knowledge will be also expressed by your speech.

If you maintain these four purposes you will be a complete communicator. And for this, you can create a good image on others mind and also express a better personality of yourself.

Level of communication:

Level means a low or high quality. A common person speaks in a very common way. We can call it a common level or better say a low level of communication. But a great person like Gandhiji or Vivekananda had a great skill of communication. For an example, when Vivekananda delivered the lecture about religion in Chicago and he started as, “My dear brothers and sisters of America …” every person was amazed and over whelmed by his style to start a speech. That is called a great or high level of communication.

I have tried to give you some tips to become an expert communicator: -

I. At first you should develop your listening skill.

II. Then you should develop your thinking power and should try to think deeply.

III. You should enlarge your stock of words.

IV. Always try to speak simple; which can easily be understood and at the same time touch other’s heart.

V. You should listen to others carefully and collect the good things from them because a wise person learns from errors of others.

VI. Try to collect more and more information from everything around you and add them in your speech. Therefore your speech will be more attractive and your knowledge will also be enlarged.

VII. You should always try to give more examples in your speech and you should have a good sense of humor. It makes your speech more enjoyable.

VIII. Try to make your speech an easily accomplished one that everybody will be attached to you.

IX. If you want to create a good image you should use image building word group. Suppose you say to someone, “I don’t know this address”, but if you say, “I hardly know this address”, which means the same thing but must create a good image of you on others. Again it will be more better that if you say, “I seldom do the work” except of “I never do the work”. Besides that if you ask anyone, “may I know your name please” except of “what’s your name”, it is more impressive than that. You also would use idioms like ‘flying out with colors’, ‘acid test’, ‘a ladies man’ etc and various type of proverb like ‘patience in bitter, but its fruit is sweet’ or ‘a smooth sea never made a skillful mariner’ etc. It has become more attractive and exposes a good personality too.

X. You should always take care about high pitch and low pitch. When you speak in louder voice that’s called high pitch and when you speak very softly or mildly that’s called low pitch. If you do that your speech must turned into attractive one.

XI. And the last but not the least, when you will give a speech your personality always should keep intact and you should never lose your confidence; always try to make firm your self-confidence.

In the end of this essay I want to say that, I have tried to give you a clear concept about how to be an expert communicator. I think it will help you a lot. Always remember that winners don’t do different things, they do things differently and ultimately you will win the heart of mankind.

Thank you for reading my essay. Hope I could give you some new ideas or old ideas in a newer form. Thank you.
